Riverdale to get a makeover
Long known as one of the most dangerous and rundown areas of Chicago, the Pacesetter housing project in Riverdale will soon get a makeover. Village officials broke ground on a project that will renovate 90 of the almost 400 homes in the neighborhood.
The $38 million project promises to rejuvenate a neighborhood that has been fighting poverty, crime, and neglect for decades. The housing complex was built in the 50s, and offers three-bedroom homes.
Plans call for a complete renovation of the first 90 homes over an 18-month period. The rest of the 397 homes in the development will all receive a makeover as the project moves along in stages.
The project is a joint public and private undertaking, with funding coming from the Illinois Housing Development Authority, Cook County Department of Planning and Development, and private investors.
City officials estimate that it will take 8 years to complete the renovation of the entire neighborhood. However, any progress towards change is welcome news to long time residents.
