Olympic Village may move west of downtown Chicago
Plans for the proposed Olympic Village in Chicago are changing. Originally earmarked for the South Loop of Chicago, developers may move the development west.
During a news conference last week, the chief executive of the U.S. Olympic Committee announced that developers and organizers were discussing potential changes to the location of the Olympic Village.
The Michael Reese Hospital is now seen as a potential location for the Olympic Village if Chicago wins its bid for the 2016 summer games.
City officials are looking at different locations to help spur growth in underdeveloped neighborhoods near downtown Chicago. The South Loop location is problematic because of potential disruptions in the neighborhood due to construction.
The complex will house as many as 16,000 athletes during the games. Upon completion of the games, the complex will be converted into condominiums and should attract many new residents to the area.
Chicago city officials have also announced plans for two new ports that will be built in preparation for the games. The two ports will be paid for by fees from recreational users and not come from city coffers.
